Any fever (38°C+) in a baby under 3 months is a medical emergency — call 999 or go to A&E immediately. For babies 3–6 months with fever, call 111 or see a GP same day. For older babies, paracetamol by weight and monitor. See our Fever Management guide for more detail.

Infant paracetamol (Calpol Infant 120mg/5ml) can be given from 2 months if baby weighs over 4kg. Always dose by weight, not age. Use the measuring syringe provided. Never more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

Back sleeping every time, for every sleep. This is the single most effective thing you can do to reduce SIDS risk. Once babies can roll both ways independently they can find their own position — but always start them on their back.

There is no clinical evidence that gripe water reduces colic symptoms better than placebo. The NHS does not recommend it. See our Colic & Gripe Water guide for what the evidence actually supports.

Symptoms of cow's milk protein allergy include eczema, vomiting, diarrhoea, blood or mucus in stool, and persistent crying. It requires GP assessment — do not self-diagnose or self-manage. A paediatric dietitian referral is often appropriate.
